Understanding GHG Emissions and Climate Change
GHG emissions refer to the release of gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat, creating a "greenhouse effect" that warms the planet. This increase in global temperatures leads to climate change, impacting ecosystems, sea levels, and weather patterns.
What is Carbon Offset?
Carbon offsets are a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. They allow organizations and individuals to compensate for their carbon emissions by investing in projects that reduce or capture an equivalent amount of GHG emissions elsewhere. By purchasing carbon credits, you effectively neutralize the emissions associated with your activities.
Only Ethikal's Approach to Offsetting Emissions
At Only Ethikal, we believe in taking responsibility for our carbon footprint. We are proud to announce our collaboration with the climate tech company Olive Gaea to address the emissions generated by the transportation and logistics of our products in two meaningful ways:
1. Measuring and Offsetting Upstream Transportation Emissions
We measure all emissions from the upstream transportation of our products, including road transportation from suppliers to our origin country location and air freight from the origin country location to the customer country location. These emissions are then neutralized by Only Ethikal through the purchase of carbon credits, effectively offsetting our supply chain logistics' emissions.
2. Empowering You to Offset Last-Mile Delivery Emissions
Through Olive Gaea's API, when you make a purchase at Only Ethikal, you will have the option to neutralize these emissions right at the checkout for a nominal fee. This fee goes directly toward the purchase of carbon credits from our selected carbon offsetting project. The delivery emissions are calculated based on the average CO2 emissions generated by the last-mile deliveries to get our products to your doorstep. This means that we figure out the environmental impact of delivering our parcels to you by looking at how much carbon dioxide (CO2) is typically released during the final leg of the delivery journey, which is the part from the distribution center to your home.
Our Chosen Carbon Offset Project: Darıca-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) in Turkey
The Verra-certified Darıca-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) is our chosen carbon offset project. The primary objective of this project is to supply 110 MW of renewable electricity to the national grid. Located in the Black Sea region of Turkey, the Darıca-1 HPP project not only contributes to mitigating climate change but also has positive socio-economic impacts, aligning with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 13 (Climate Action).
